Family Photos at the Fair. Can we do that?

The state fair is in town, the excitement is palpable, and you're all set to go. But wait, have you ever considered capturing precious family moments amidst the fair's colorful chaos? Join me as I share my experiences and expert tips on capturing memorable family photos at the state fair.

You might be wondering - what should we wear? How do we deal with the crowds? Will the kids stay focused? If you've ever pondered these questions, keep reading to gain valuable insights from my photography experience.

Choosing the right time to visit is crucial, and it largely depends on your subjects. If you're photographing a family with young kids, avoiding the busy hours is a wise choice. We opted to arrive first thing in the morning when the fair opened, reducing distractions for the children. However, couples looking for a romantic atmosphere might prefer a weeknight when the rides are in full swing, and the fairgrounds are bathed in golden light.

When choosing your outfits, remember, comfort is key. At the fair, people don't typically wear formal attire, so opt for a more casual and relaxed look. Not only will this choice make your photos feel authentic and reflective of who you are, but it will also ensure that everyone is comfortable and can enjoy the fair to the fullest. Trust me, your family will thank you for making this thoughtful decision.

The next thing to consider is where you'd like to keep your focus. Ask your clients what their favorite thing is to do while they visit the fair every year. We chose to keep our focus on the games, and it was a delightful choice. The game booths are usually full of bright colors, offering a vibrant and playful backdrop. They often come with seating, making it convenient for group shots or candid moments. This way, you can capture all the fun and lively fair vibes in your photos. Below I've listed a few options to consider.

Choose your fairground focus:

  • Games
  • Rides
  • Food
  • Petting Zoo

When kids are involved, remember to embrace the chaos and don't stress about capturing the 'perfect' photo. Let them be themselves and focus on documenting those fleeting childhood moments.

The state fair can be a magical backdrop for family photos. So, are you ready to grab your camera and create some unforgettable memories at the fair?
